Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Unwed soon-to-be mother needs info on paternity testing.

I'm soon to be a mother and will have to determine paternity when the baby arrives. What legal rights do I have concerning not paying for the paternity test. If I put the man's name on the birth certificate as the father and he contests it, does he have to pay to have the test done to prove it?

You need to proceed with caution. You cannot put a man's name on the birth certificate unless the man goes to the hospital and signs a consent to do that. If he will not, then you will have to file for custody and child support. If he denies paternity then it will become a paternity proceeding first. Once he challenges paternity, the court ordinarily will place the cost on him.
