Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

Cheated by landlord who is Senior Citizen

When i moved in my new apartment i gave my landlord two checks one for deposit and one for Rent. But next day my landlord took one more check for rent as his bank was not accepting the rental check due to mistake in memo. So i gave him new check. But when i asked my landlord about old check he claimed that he has lost that check but asked me to trust him so i did. Now i am no more living in that apartment for last 4 months but last week he claimed that lost check.

Now i dont know what legal action i can take against him as i did not had any signed lease for that apartment.

Re: Cheated by landlord who is Senior Citizen

You should always put a stop payment on any lost checks.

You can try to call him & explain to him the mistake he made. See if he will reimburse you.

Lastly, I would sue him in Small Cliams Court & I would file a criminal charge of theft with your local police department.

If you have more questions you can call me @ 201-646-9600.
