Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Discrimination on the job.

I have been with my current employer for approximately six months. I am the only African-American in the company. I was told, when I first started, that I would get a raise after 30 days. I have yet to receive this raise. My supervisor comes up with a different excuse whenever the subject comes up. He told me that if I didn't make the day's rate I could not get a raise. However, everyone else gets their raise whether they make rate or not. I am the only one who does not. Even people who just started have received raises. I have also been called ethnic slurs by a supervisor and a co-worker. I was also moved from a position I was very good at, because a less qualified white employee wanted the job. What are my options? What can I do about this situation?

Re: Discrimination on the job.

Hello and thank you for your

question. You have the option

of filing a complaint with

the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. How-

ever, there is only a certain

percentage of cases that this

agency investigates, so you

should be ready to file a law-

suit, if you receive a right

to sue letter. The suit should be filed in Federal

District Court. This is probably the most effective

way to deal with the situation. Be strong and good

luck....also make sure you

hire an attorney who concentrates in this area on

a regular basis.
